Bad Carbs

You've heard all the talk about low carb diets, but do you even know what a carb is? Did you know there are good carbs and bad carbs? Do you know the difference?

Why Bad Carbs are Bad
When you eat bad carbs, your body is able to break them down quickly. The reason that's bad is because as soon as your body breaks those bad carbs down, you're hungry again. And when you're hungry, a quick fix is usually a snack made with--you guessed it--bad carbs! Then the cycle repeats itself, and you find yourself eating all the time because you're hungry all the time.

To break this cycle, you ought to try switching to good carbs. It takes your body a lot longer to break down good carbs than it does to break down bad carbs, so you feel full longer, and therefore, eat less. The less you eat, the less you weigh. Make sense?

Okay, that still doesn't tell you what you probably really want to know--which foods are good carbs and which are bad? Here's a list of bad carbs:

Cake
Pie
Cookies
Brownies
Desserts of any kind, really
Anything made with refined sugar
Anything made with white flour
White bread
Regular pasta
White rice

And here's a list of good carbs:

Fruits
Vegetables
Whole grains (whole grain crackers, whole grain breads, oats, whole grain cereals)
High-fiber foods
Anything made with whole wheat flour
Whole wheat bread
Whole wheat pasta
Long grain or brown rice

You might be surprised at how tasty some of the good carbs really are. It does take a little forethought and planning to start replacing foods with bad carbs for foods with good carbs, but eventually it will become a habit, and you'll see yourself slowly start to lose weight. (Of course, this happens much faster if you exercise too.) And don't forget to drink your milk and lots and lots of water. All of this is good advice for good health.
