Why Good Carbs are So Good
Because of the structure of good carbs, it takes the body a long time to break them down. That sounds bad, right? Well, it's not. The longer it takes for your body to break food down, the longer you'll feel full. Think of it this way: As long as there's food in your stomach that's not being broken down by your digestive system, you won't be hungry. But if food is broken down right away, it's no longer in your stomach and you'll want to eat again. And if you eat more bad carbs, the cycle continues, and you'll keep eating more and more. That's what makes you gain weight. On the other hand, if your diet consists of good carbs, you'll eat less, and consequently, you'll weigh less.

Where to Find Good Carbs
Good carbs are found in the following foods:


Whole grains, such as whole grain breads, whole grain crackers, whole grain cereals and oats
Fruits
Vegetables
Whole wheat pasta
Brown or long grain rice


Instead of trying a low carb diet to lose weight, try switching to good carbs instead. First of all, you won't have to give up bread, pasta and rice. You'll just have to switch what kind of bread, pasta and rice you eat. That being said, there are things you will have to give up, but these things should only be eaten rarely (if ever) anyway:


Anything made with refined sugar. This includes most dessert-type foods and snacks like cake, pie, brownies, cookies, candy, etc. It also includes sugary juices and sodas.
Anything made with white flour. This includes white bread, regular pasta, white rice, pizza crust, cake, cookies, pie crust, "dumplings," etc. (If you make these things yourself, you can substitute whole wheat flour and be fine.)


Long story short, if you stick with foods that are natural and "un-fooled around with" you should be healthier. You might not lose weight as fast as you would on a strict low carb diet, but the slower your weight comes off, the longer it stays off. (You should aim for 1-2 pounds a week.)
