Is A Low Carb Diet Really Right For You?
It's easy to understand why so many people have opted for a low carb diet. Look around! A lot of people (including celebrities) have had great success with it. However, going on a low carb diet is risky business when it comes to your health.
A low carb diet brings with it significant risks
If you follow a low carb diet to the letter, chances are you'll see results. Fairly quickly, too! But if you go off of it, you'll probably gain your weight back just as quicky, and then some! Before you start a low carb diet, ask yourself if you're really ready to give up the following foods for good:
- Desserts and sugary snacks like cake, cookies, pie, brownies, cheesecake, etc.
- White breads
- Pasta
- White rice
Also, consider the health risks:
- Nausea, headaches and bad breath - all of these are side effects of ketosis, which is a state your body goes into when it's burning fat.
- Grumpiness or moodiness - Cutting carbs out of your diet means your brain isn't producing a hormone called serotonin, which is a "feel-good" chemical.
- Mental sluggishness - Since carbs are one of the few nutrients that actually make it to your brain, cutting them so drastically basically means you're not feeding your brain.
- Higher risk of cancer, kidney damage and osteoporosis - Most low carb diets cut out vegetables, fruits and milk. These provide vitamins, minerals and micronutrients your body needs to ward off disease. In addition, cutting milk out means you're not getting enough calcium for bone health and dental health.
- Constipation - This goes back to not getting enough fruits and vegetables. Fiber is considered a carb, and fiber is in most fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Most of these things are severely restricted on a low carb diet, but you need fiber for regulation.
Sure, most low carb diet books will tell you to take a supplements, but who wants to go in debt buying supplements in addition to all that meat? Not to mention the fact that most vitamin pills and other supplements are really big and hard to swallow. Plus, they are supplements--that means they are meant to supplement your current diet, not serve as your only means of getting these nutrients.
So be careful. Get all the facts before you decide to go on a low carb diet!
