Is low carb foodreally low carb? Sometimes, but more often than not, it ends up having the same calorie count as regular versions of the same food. Read the labels on low carb food carefully before you buy it.

Low Carb Food

One of the reasons a low carb diet works for so many people is because as a result of cutting carbs, you're also cutting calories. Most low carb diets recommend that you only eat 20 grams of carbs a day for the first two weeks. Since the recommended carb intake for most people is 130-225 grams a day, and carbs have seven calories per gram, you can see how cutting carbs is equivalent to cutting calories.

Does Low Carb Food have Fewer Calories?
Most low carb food has as many calories--and as many carbs--as the regular version of the same thing. So what's the difference? The labeling. Food manufacturers start out with a total number of carbs, then subtract the good carbs (like those that are found in fiber and other similar ingredients) and give a number they refer to as "net carbs." And many foods that are labeled as low carb food have been reformulated, so they are adding other ingredients like sugar alcohols and soy proteins that often have the same calorie count per gram as carbs, so you really aren't cutting calories by eating their so-called low carb food. To get around this, read low carb food labels carefully.

Low Carb Food and Nutrition
If you're truly concerned about watching your carbs, your best bet is to stick with low carb food like fruits and vegetables, and whole grain products. Instead of eating foods with refined sugar and white flour, opt for whole wheat or whole grain breads, whole wheat pasta and long grain or brown rice instead of the regular kinds you're used to. And make sure you get enough fiber--at least four grams per serving--to avoid constipation, the risk of obesity, the risk of diabetes and the risk of heart disease.
